About this piece:

After finding out what the theme was for this competition, I was more than eager to enter, excited by all the possibilities such a theme presented. I have learnt about many of the old masters through art history and love the idea of taking one of their works and re-imaining it in some way.

About the Artist:

“Creativity takes Courage.”

Tanya Theunissen matriculated with five distinctions in 2013, having further received full colours in both Drama and Leadership during her high school years. She has completed a Bachelor of Visual Arts in 2023, as well as completed several short courses in both Creative Writing and Graphic Design through the University of Cape Town’s online platform. She aims to further pursue her studies, aiming to obtain her Honors and Masters in the Arts.

She has completed two years of work experience as a graphic design intern through mLabs (2019) and the Randburg Chamber of Commerce (2020-2021), and now works as a Free-lance graphic designer, traditional and digital artist, as well as an online tutor in English.

Art encompasses all aspects of Tanya’s life. She has self-taught experience in numerous art mediums and styles, including sculpture, painting, and haberdashery, including sewing, knitting, and cross stitch. She also loves creating digital art, including animation. She is an artist who is always looking to learn new mediums, styles, and aesthetics to find ways in creating interesting and innovative pieces. She also dabbles in writing, particularly poetry. Included in her achievements is having a poem published under the Avbob National Poetry Competition for 2023, making it eligible for an award in the English category for 2024.

Due to her battles with chronic physical and mental illness, she ultimately aims to create art that can help raise awareness for causes important to her. These include projects in nature and animal conservation, children’s health and education, and chronic and mental health. She dreams of being able to make a difference in the world, one painting, sculpture, or animation at a time.
